FOREWORD

The Lawrence Collection of Roman coins consists of a vast agglomer- ation of specimens, generally in very inferior state of preservation. The majority of these had to be catalogued in big lots, their commercial value not warranting a full description, but museums and private collectors seek- ing for individual coins may find in these lots many desiderata.

The Republican coins are on average better than the Imperial, as will be gathered from the Plates (I to III) where several Denarii of the Social War are illustrated, as well as others of rare moneyers of M. Arrius Secundus, L. Statius Murcus, Q. Labienus, L. Servius Rufus, L. Numonius Vaala, Pompey, Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, and Augustus.

As with the English series, the British Museum have been allowed to purchase privately from the collection all the coins not represented in the National Collection.

The Lawrence collection should give dealers an excellent opportunity to replenish their stock.

The Sale of the Imperial coins (lots 414 to 1390) will take place on January 17th, 18th and 19th, 1951. (L.Forrer.)

of Coins and Medals.

A‘ TER each sale these catalogues are

issued with the prices realised printed in the margin opposite each lot, thus giving at a glance a reliable guide to values.

The final test of value must always be auction prices rather than the figures given in books of reference, for changing times and fashions soon render the latter obsolete

and misleading.

On the average we issue twelve Coin and Medal catalogues a year, some of which are usually of sales of important collections. The priced catalogues are posted to subscribers as scon as ready, usually about a week after the date of sale and the
